Double Rugby World Cup winner Frans Malherbe will not face Scotland next weekend after being ruled out of the Springboks tour with an ankle injury.
Malherbe, widely considered one of the top tightheads in world rugby, picked up the injury playing for the Stormers against Glasgow Warriors on Saturday.
Now the 76-times capped prop has been ruled out of the tour - which also sees Rassie Erasmus' side play England and Wales after their trip to Scottish Gas Murrayfield next weekend. He's been replaced by fly-half Jordan Hendrikse.
Malberhe is the second Stormers player to withdraw from the Springboks squad after Damian Willemse, who was also injured in the defeat to Glasgow.
Versatile front-row Jan-Hendrik Wessels also pulled out of the squad earlier this week. Their places went to Bulls back-row Cameron Hanekom and hooker Johan Grobbelaar.
Erasmus explained why he's replaced prop Malherbe with fly-half Hendrikse.
“Jordan has been playing very well for the Hollywoodbets Sharks in the Vodacom URC and he’s a capped Springbok, so he is familiar with our structures.
“This will also serve as a great opportunity for him to get further exposure at international level and in the Springbok set-up itself.
"We also have good depth among the forwards, so we opted to call up Jordan to add further depth among the backs."
The Springboks started their on-field preparations for the trip to Murrayfield in Jersey on Tuesday.
