Blair Kinghorn’s dreams of winning a double in his first season with Toulouse are still alive after they beat La Rochelle to book a place in the Top14 final next weekend.
The Scotland international scored a first half try, capitalising on a yellow card to England wing Jack Nowell to go over after a quickly taken penalty by Antoine Dupont, in the 39-23 win in Bordeaux.
In a bad-tempered affair, La Rochelle had both starting props, France international duo Reda Wardi and Uini Atonio, sent off in the second half.
Atonio’s red card came with the game in the balance, La Rochelle leading 20-15, and Wardi was dismissed for a headbutt on the hour, by which time Toulouse had established a nine-point lead.
Despite Kinghorn’s try, La Rochelle led 20-15 at the break thanks to tries from Tolu Latu and Gregory Alldritt.
Kinghorn, who started to the wing to accommodate Thomas Ramos in the Toulouse side, thought he had set up Juan Cruz Malia for a second half try, only to be called back for a forward pass.
But Mallia, who scored in the first half, was not to be denied a double, scoring shortly after Atonio’s dismissal, with Ramos converting to put Toulouse 22-20 ahead.
A fourth Toulouse try, scored by Santiago Chocobares, who charged down an Antoine Hastoy kick to race clear, put the game beyond Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle.
Hastoy kicked a penalty shortly after Wardi’s sending off to cut the deficit to six points, but the two-times European champions could not overhaul Kinghorn’s team.
In an exclusive interview with Scotland Rugby News last month, Kinghorn said to complete the double in his first season with the club would be a huge achievement.
He said: "To win two trophies this year would be amazing. To win a Champions Cup trophy alongside performing week in, week out in the league is really hard to do, so that is definitely the goal now.
“I feel like it’s definitely something that we can achieve.”
Kinghorn and Toulouse will now head to the Stade Velodrome in Marseille for next week’s final, where they will play the winners of Saturday’s last four clash between Stade Francais and Bordeaux Begles.
