Finn Russell's bid to win just the second medal of his career ended in disappointment as his Bath side went down 25-21 to Northampton Saints in a thrilling Premiership final at Twickenham.

The Scotland fly-half had hoped to crown a stellar debut season with the Somerset club by leading them to a first title since 1996.

And for a while it looked like Russell was on course to be the matchwinner as he kicked a penalty to put his team in front late in the game.

Saints, though, rallied and a try from Alex Mitchell saw the trophy head instead to Northampton who had Scotland prop Elliot Millar-Mills on the field as they saw off some late Bath resistance to seal the win.

The defeat was tough on a Bath side - who also included Scots Cam Redpath and Josh Bayliss in their matchday squad - who played for almost an hour with just 14 men after Ben Obano's red card and who looked the team most likely to win the match until Mitchell's late score.
