The Tuipulotu brothers won’t be short on motivation this weekend after a surprise visit by their “Greenock gran" as he prepares to play for Scotland for the first time.

The siblings qualify for Scotland through Greenock-born Jacqueline Thomson, who moved to Australia as a youngster.

And Scotland captain Sione, the eldest of the sibling duo, admitted he had given up on the dream of his grandmother watching him play for Scotland live due to her age and health.

However, with the help of Scottish Rugby and Skyscanner, 77-year-old Jacqueline was able to fly ‘home’ for the first time in 12 years and surprise her grandsons ahead of this weekend’s games.

And she will be able to watch both grandsons play - Mosese will play his first game for Scotland ‘A’ against Chile on Saturday, before Sione leads the national team against Australia on Sunday.

An “over the moon” Sione admitted seeing his gran sitting in the Scotland changing room at Murrayfield was a huge surprise.

The Scotland captain said: "It’s not something I thought would be possible.

“I’m over the moon and feeling so happy about everything.

"Mosese has always been my gran’s favourite and it’s so cool she will get to see the two of us play this week.

“I’m really looking forward to running out in front of a packed-out stadium and then looking up into the stands during the anthems to see my mum and gran. It’ll be so special.

“My gran is such a character and is probably where we get most of our personality from. I’m so happy that everyone will get to meet her and put a face to everything.

“I’d given up hope of my Gran coming to see my play in Scotland so for it now to be a reality is just unbelievable.”

Mosese, whose appearance for the ‘A’ team will be his first in a Scotland jersey since his summer move from the Sydney-based Waratahs, said it was a huge surprise.

“It was actually a massive surprise just because me and my brother didn't know anything about it.

“They told us that it was a fan that had won a competition, so we were just expecting a kid to be there.

But it just flew over our heads, I guess. We were just concentrating on playing this week, so it was actually a big surprise.

While the 23-year-old only left Australia in the summer, it was an emotional reunion for the family. He admitted he was unsure when he would see his family, and particularly his gran, again as he embarked on a new adventure with Edinburgh.

The centre said: "It was a pretty emotional one also because when I left back home to say goodbye and move over here for rugby, you never quite know when you're going to see your family again.

“It was a very special moment just to see my gran again.”

The elder of the Tuipulotu brothers has described the influence his gran has had on his life – and the choice to play for Scotland – and his younger sibling echoed those sentiments.

Mosese added: “She's always been around, sometimes when our parents weren't around, she'd take care of us. She's a great woman with plenty of character so we love her.”

And he is looking forward to representing his gran in a Scotland team for the first time on Saturday night at Hive Stadium.

"Since moving over here, my love for the people, for the culture has been pretty large and of course my grandma is Scottish, so I'm very happy to be representing her for the first time this weekend.

“I don't need any extra motivation this week with my family down and I'm sure it'll be pretty emotional seeing her in the stands.”

He said: “I'm not trying to put any more pressure on myself. I know that if I just play my game, hopefully things will work out.

“I've only played four games for Edinburgh, so I know this will be a step up.

“We're expecting a good outfit in Chile and we're looking forward to the game.”

And having made the trip from Australia, Thomson can’t wait to watch her grandsons in action for her native Scotland.

She said: “I’m excited for this weekend - getting to watch my grandsons play for Scotland and sing Flower of Scotland with them will be so special.”
