Gregor Townsend praised his Scotland side for navigating a difficult opening quarter to record a comfortable win over Chile.

The home side started the game brighter and deservedly took the lead through a long-range penalty before Scotland got hold of the game.

Townsend was pleased with the response from his side to that tricky opening period.

He said: “It was a proper Test match in terms of the atmosphere and the physicality that Chile brought and the pressure that they put us under early on.

"But I was really pleased with how we responded and how our accuracy improved as the game went on.

“It was a pleasing 60 minutes of the game, especially in that second half when we went through the gears and looked really sharp.

Townsend praised double try scorer Jamie Dobie for his performance.

"I thought Jamie Dobie was also very sharp on the wing and then played half an hour at scrum-half and looked very busy there and physical too," he said.

“Matt Currie was making his debut a couple of weeks ago and today ran a couple of cracking lines, one to score a try.

There were also words of encouragement for debutant hooker Patrick Harrison, who has had to be patient on this tour before being handed an opportunity in Santiago.

“I’m really pleased for Patrick," Townsend added.

"He’s had to wait three weeks for his game but he’s trained really well and he showed a fair bit of what he’s been doing well in training; really accurate line-outs, strong maul carrying and really good energy."

Two years ago, Scotland 'A' played Chile and Sione Tuipulotu was the only man to start that match who was involved from the off tonight.

He was impressed with the hosts' improvement over the past two years.

"I played this Chile team two years ago and they're a lot better now," the Glasgow centre said.

Scotland now head to Montevideo to play Uruguay and Tuipulotu knows that will be another tough contest next Saturday.

He added: "We thought the last two games of the tour against Chile and Uruguay would be the hardest so we're expecting a really motivated Uruguay team next week."
