Gregor Townsend has named his Scotland squad for the Autumn Nations Series, with five uncapped players included.

After helping guide Glasgow to the United Rugby Championship title last season, Tom Jordan is included for the first time as his Glasgow team-mate Sione Tuipulotu takes over the captaincy.

The other uncapped players are Glasgow lock Alex Samuel, and Edinburgh trio Ben Muncaster, Mosese Tuipulotu and Freddy Douglas, the young back-row who is yet to make his senior professional debut.

There is no place in the squad for either Richie or Jonny Gray, or Glasgow hooker Johnny Matthews.

There are, though, recalls for Edinburgh tighthead prop D’Arcy Rae, who has one cap from 2019, and Northampton centre Rory Hutchinson, who last played for Scotland on the 2022 summer tour of Argentina.

Townsend said: “We’ve been encouraged by the early season performances of our players and are looking forward to working with them once again.

"We had some stand-out performers on our summer tour, who have earned their selections for the Autumn Test campaign.”

Discussing the appointment of Tuipulotu as the new Scotland captain, he added: “Sione has been one of our key leaders over the last couple of years and thrives in that leadership role.

"We’ve seen that in his outings as Glasgow captain and when he had the opportunity to lead the team against Chile a few months ago.

“He often sets the emotional tone and mindset required for the team and he also contributes significantly to both our attack and defence. Last season we looked to deepen our leadership group and we now have a number of people who could step up as captain.

"Sione is aware that he will have leaders around him to offer support and share the leadership responsibilities needed throughout the week and during the game."

Given he's yet to play for Edinburgh's first team, Douglas' inclusion is the big surprise in the squad.

Townsend explained his performances for Edinburgh 'A' - where he was outstanding against Glasgow Warriors last week - and with the Scotland U20 squad have earned him a first call-up.

He said: “Although Freddy Douglas has yet to appear in the URC, what we’ve seen with his performances with Edinburgh A and Scotland Under-20s shows us that he has the skills and mindset that can thrive in our environment."
