Edinburgh breathed life into their United Rugby Championship campaign with their first win against Stormers on Saturday, but head coach Sean Everitt knows his players must back that up when Caridff visit Hive Stadium next weekend.

After being trounced by the Lions in South Africa a week ago, Edinburgh put in a much-improved performance to beat the former champion Stormers convincingly in the end, though not without significant room for improvement for the hosts.

Everitt said: “It's only one game that we've really put in a good performance and we need to put in five or six of them in a row to be able to say that we are where we need to be. I know the players know that as well.

“But yes, I’m happy that the South African trip is now beyond us and we can look forward to playing a few home games in the UK.

“But the opposition doesn't get any easier.”

Cardiff will make the trip having lost three of their first four games, with their only success so far coming against Zebre.

Everitt knows that despite their results so far, the Welsh side will pose a threat.

“Cardiff will be hurting after their loss to Scarlets,” the Edinburgh head coach added.

“They are a quality outfit with dangerous backs and we're going to have to put in another good performance defensively next week to be able to contain them.

“It will be great to build momentum on this and get some wins under the belt going forward."

While Everitt admitted it had been a challenging week after the loss in Johannesburg, he said Edinburgh are not the only side to endure a difficult run of games.

“There are a lot of teams that have gone through adversity and have come out on top,” he continued.

"Chatting to [Stormers coach] John Dobson during the week, he said ‘Sean, don't feel too bad, I copped 46 points in 30 minutes against the Lions a couple of years ago’ so we're not the only team that's done that.

“The team showed tonight what their character is. And this is a team that wants to do well for the city of Edinburgh.”

Meanwhile outstanding back-row Ben Muncaster, who was making the first start of his career in the number seven jersey, hopes the win can be the catalyst for the club to go on a winning run.

"I think there’s a lot more confidence in the boys and let’s take that momentum into the next game against Cardiff,” he said.

Muncaster showed the full range of his abilities for his two tries, hitting an excellent line before showing serious pace to finish his first, before bludgeoning his way over to seal victory late on.

He was quick to heap praise on back-row companion Jamie Ritchie for teeing up the opening score.

“It was credit to Jamie, he’s so good at ‘biting’ the guy, when he takes it right to the line [before passing]. I was pretty much able to run straight through because of him.”

With competition aplenty in Edinburgh’s back-row, Muncaster will need to make the most of every opportunity and he showed his versatility in his first outing in the seven shirt.

“I absolutely loved it,” he declared, before adding: “It feels like my confidence is a lot higher now and I’m just wanting to get even more momentum and go into the next game and play better.”

And Muncaster, a product of North Berwick RFC, acknowledged the win over the former URC champions was far from polished, but believes that leaves Edinburgh in a good place.

He added: “The fact that we’ve got stuff to work on and we’re still winning and getting a bonus point is very much a positive thing.

“We can work on it next week and bounce into the Cardiff game.”
