Edinburgh centre Mark Bennett will this week undergo surgery on a quad injury picked up on the club's tour of South Africa.

The Scotland international was forced off early in the defeat to the Bulls last weekend and missed the 55-21 thrashing by the Lions in Johannesburg.

The club has confirmed today (Tuesday) that Bennett will undergo surgery this week, with no timeline on his recovery.

It is the latest injury blow for the former Glasgow man, who made the move east in the summer of 2017 but missed the first half of his debut campaign injured. He then suffered a serious hamstring injury just two games into the 2018/19 season.

Meanwhile, there is better news regarding fellow Scotland centre Matt Currie, who has recovered from the hamstring injury that kept him out of the matches in South Africa.

Currie has returned to team training and is available to face the Stormers on Saturday.

The club said Harry Paterson will rejoin training this week after recovering from a cut on his foot picked up in pre-season, though head coach Sean Everitt has warned it will take the Scotland fullback time to get match fit.

Hooker Dave Cherry - who was also forced off early in the defeat to the Bulls - is progressing through his rehab.
