Glasgow Warriors are close to finalising a deal that will see their home leg of the 1872 Cup move from Scotstoun to Hampden Park.
The first leg of the United Rugby Championship (URC) double-header will be played on December 21
Edinburgh regularly move their home leg from their 7,000-capacity Hive Stadium home to Scottish Gas Murrayfield, which holds 67,000 supporters.
The inter-city derby in the capital last December attracted a crowd of more than 30,000.
Glasgow's Scotstoun home has a capacity of just over 7,000, and the Warriors have explored the option of moving the game across the city.
While the deal is not yet confirmed, Scotland Rugby News understands it is expected to be rubber-stamped in the coming days.
