Max Williamson has finally awoken from his dream that was the 2023/24 season but the Glasgow Warriors lock is hungry for more.
At this stage last year, Williamson was yet to make his Glasgow debut but he’s now an important member of Franco Smith’s squad and a Scotland international.
Williamson debuted against Benetton in November, scored his first try against Cardiff in March and was rewarded for his club form by Gregor Townsend and he featured in all four of Scotland’s summer tour games to cap off a remarkable few months.
Asked whether he could replicate the achievements of last season, Williamson replied: “Yeah, I don't know - it was a great year last year. I think personally and as a club, we’ll be looking to start off from where we left off last year pretty much. I've been excited through pre-season, had a really good time and now I’m feeling ready to go.”
“I couldn't be happier with how it's gone but I still have intentions to keep going. I'm not just happy to stay where I am. I want to keep pushing forward this year. It's obviously another big season for us and myself so I’m going to keep pushing hard.”
The Warriors start their title defence with a tricky trip to Northern Ireland on Saturday night to face Ulster in front of a capacity crowd. Glasgow will now be viewed as a major scalp as reigning champions but Williamson is relishing the challenge.
“We're certainly high in confidence and excited to play Ulster,” he added.
“Obviously, they’re a very good team at home so I think it's a good one to start on. It’s a big game and, as we're champions now, every team's going to want to come at us. It’s on us to bring it every week, knowing that and sort of embrace it and take that into every game. But I’m really excited and can’t wait to get going really.”
