There was a solitary away victory in Round 2 of the URC with Glasgow among the home wins and Edinburgh losing on the road.
Here are some of the stand out stats on a mixed weekend for the Scottish sides – as well as a couple of exiles.
Glasgow Warriors
Victory over Benetton was their 25th consecutive home win in the URC regular season, the longest such run in the club’s history. They haven’t lost one of these fixtures at Scotstoun since a game against Leinster on October 22 2021.
Gregor Hiddleston's defensive contributions cannot go unmentioned. He has attempted 50 tackles in his last two outings for Glasgow, equivalent to 38 per 80 minutes played, with a success rate of 96%.
Try 1: Kyle Steyn
The first winger since Tommy Seymour in 2016/17 to bag the Warriors’ inaugural home try of the season. This was the eighth time in the past 10 seasons that the opening try of the campaign at Scotstoun was scored in front of the West Stand.
Try 2: Matt Fagerson
14 of his 17 tries in the URC have been scored in the first half of games, including 11 scored in the opening 20 minutes.
This was just the second try by a Warriors’ number eight in their last 32 matches (also Ally Miller v Bayonne in December 2023).
Try 3: Rory Darge
His second score being disallowed means that he still has more tries for Scotland (five in 1,362 minutes) than he does for Glasgow (four in 3,271 minutes).
Try 4: Jamie Dobie
Has as many tries (five) in his last 13 games for club and country as he had scored in his previous 64 matches.
Duncan Weir’s conversion of Dobie’s try brought up 1,500 points scored in the Franco Smith era.
Try 5: Kyle Steyn
His sixth try double for Glasgow (also versus Connacht, Dragons, Newcastle, Toulon and Zebre). With 28 tries, Steyn has moved ahead of Thom Evans into ninth place all-time in the club’s top try scorers list.
Try 6: Euan Ferrie
The first time in Glasgow’s 709 matches during the professional era that all three members of the starting back row have notched tries in the same game (although Ferrie was playing on the wing by the time he crossed for his score!)
Edinburgh
The capital club lost for the eighth time in the ten matches they have played on South African soil. The Kings (December 2017) and Sharks (March 2022) have provided Edinburgh’s only wins.
They have also collected four losing bonus points though, with the Bulls’ game just the latest occasion where they probably ought to have improved their win percentage.
It was a big day for Ross Thompson, in just his second appearance for Edinburgh. This was the first time he has scored more than 10 points in a game since 22 January 2022.
The former Glasgow fly-half knocked over a conversion which took him past 300 points for his clubs. He has scored as many penalties in his first two URC games for Edinburgh as he did in his last 18 league matches for the Warriors.
Up front, the Edinburgh pack carried for 88 metres, just three metres more than Bulls’ number eight, Cameron Hanekom, managed on his own.
Try 1: Ewan Ashman
Has notched eight tries in his last eight games for club and country, one for every 60 minutes played.
So far in 2024, Edinburgh have played 15 matches, during which their front row have outscored their back 3 by 21 tries to eight.
Exiles
Blair Kinghorn lost for the first time as a Toulouse player after winning his first 17 games for the French champions. He also picked up just the second yellow card of a career that spans more than 200 top level matches.
Jonny Gray was in the Bordeaux side that ended Kinghorn’s streak. The Scotland lock has attempted more tackles than any other player on the pitch in each of his first three starts for his new club.
