Former Glasgow Warriors captain Jonny Gray has joined Bordeaux Begles after leaving the Exeter Chiefs.

The Scotland lock had left his previous club after agreeing a mutual termination of his contract.

The early release from Exeter followed a period out of action after dislocating his knee during the Champions Cup defeat to La Rochelle.

Gray had been released early from his contract in order to 'explore new options' with the Scotland internationalist now signed at Bordeaux.

The French side confirmed his arrival in a social media post on Thursday morning.

The 30-year-old played more than 100 times during his time with Glasgow Warriors after making his debut as an 18-year-old in 2012 against Edinburgh at Scotstoun.

He had become a centurion by the time he reached 25 and played a big role in the club winning the Pro 12 title in 2015. 

His Scotland debut came in 2013 and he's now played 77 times for his country and would have added more to that over the last year had it not been for his injury. 

On his exit from Exeter, Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter commented: “Jonny has been a big part of our journey in recent seasons. He has been a great figure to have amongst our squad, with his international experience and the physicality he brings to games – his tackle stats speak for themselves.

“He has experienced some injury frustration during the end of his time with us, but I’m sure Jonny will do everything he can to come back stronger as he moves on to the next step of his rugby journey.

“I’d like to thank Jonny for everything he gave to the Chiefs shirt, and I know the club and fans will join me in wishing him all the best for the future.”
