Poor Mark Bennett. Just a few short months ago he was being nominated for World Rugby Breakthrough Player Of The Year following his heroics at the Rugby World Cup, now this.
Released from the Scotland camp to play in this week’s Pro12 clash against the Blues, he was in fine form for Glasgow Warriors and this try would have more than likely ended up sealing the bonus point win – had he managed to get it down.
In the end they won 27-20 and pulled level with Edinburgh in 7th place with 43 points, and at least his teammate Peter Murchie could see the funny side of it. Whether Glasgow coach Gregor Townsend will be so happy, only Bennett will know. Either way, we have no doubt he’ll be back to his try scoring best soon.
And he should take some consolation in the knowledge that he’s not the first, and certainly won’t be the last player to drop a certain try.
When it comes to try line gaffes it happens to the best of them.
Owen Farrell made this clanger against Toulouse last month
Former Glasgow and 7’s speedster Carlin Isles fumbled a certain score in his first game for Ayr
And last, but by no means least, the great Juan Leguizamon left his London Irish teammates mortified when he did this against Wasps…
